Stander met en scène la vie d'Andre Stander, un officier de police blanc de Johannesburg, en Afrique du Sud. Au début des années quatre-vingt, celui-ci manifesta sa révolte envers le système de l'apartheid en passant de l'autre côté de la loi et en devenant gangster.En 1983-1984, le Stander Gang, qu'il forma avec ses complices Alan Heyl et Patrick McCall, pouvait braquer jusqu'à quatre banques par jour. Andre Stander tomba sous les balles de la police à Fort Lauderdale, en Floride, et Patrick McCall trouva également la mort dans les mêmes circonstances à Johannesburg.Alan Heyl fut, pour sa part, arrêté et jeté en prison en Grande-Bretagne. Il fut libéré durant les années quatre-vingt dix.
